From art... Watteau
Like many artists, periodically I look to the masters for inspiration, reimagining their works as part of my practice. French Rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau was an amazing draftsman, filling sketchbooks with chalk drawings he then used in his ‘fêtes galantes’. In fact the same groupings of figures appear in several of his works. Part of Watteau’s appeal for me is that his parks and woodland settings feel more like stage sets than real landscapes, blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Trees lean in as if watching and listening, becoming characters in their own right.
