Working practice
I work predominantly in acrylics, pastels and oils, in a figurative style which often borders on the abstract. Adept at working in many different media, my work is best described as painterly and atmospheric.
Relishing the physical qualities of my materials, I use sponges and rags to move paint around freely when making larger pieces, or bring a lightness of touch when building up delicate layers of watercolour or pencil. Using collage and monoprints enables me to simplify forms and eliminate the unnecessary, whilst embracing the accidental.
Inspiration comes from natural forms and landscapes, whether urban or rural, and particularly from the transformative effect of light. My process is rooted in observation; my love of drawing and eye for detail lending everyday subjects an unexpected weight, and inviting the viewer to slow down and share the world as I see it.
Resulting artworks can be recognisable depictions of the chosen motif, or may lean towards a more personal response in which composition, colour and texture take precedence.
